The National Institutional Rating Framework (NIRF) is a rating system adopted by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to rank higher education institutions in India. This framework was approved by the former Ministry of Human Resource Development (now the Ministry of Education) and launched by the Minister on 29 September 2015.
Depending on the area of work, under 11 sectors of industry - mainly Universities, Professionals, Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, law, medicine, architecture, dentistry and research. The framework uses several parameters for ranking purposes such as resources, research and stakeholder perspective. These parameters are grouped into five clusters and specific weights are assigned to these clusters. These weights depend on the type of business. About 3,500 firms only participated in the first phase of the ranking.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has emerged as a reliable model for students pursuing higher education in India. Its credibility stems from several factors:
Government Approval: Being the initiative of the Ministry of Education, NIRF carries the burden of government support and lays down the lines of transparency and impartiality.
Comprehensive evaluation: NIRF evaluates institutions on several parameters, including teaching and learning resources, research output, certification results, outreach and learning, and visibility. This thereby helps the establishment have a holistic view of the firm's strengths.
Transparency: NIRF is based on a very transparent methodology, so the ranking process is open to scrutiny. This process builds trust in the minds of students, parents, and academic communities.
Comparative Analysis: NIRF enables students to evaluate various institutions according to their priorities, such as research focus, locations, community outreach, and more.
Quality Assurance: NIRF, through its process of ranking institutions, indirectly encourages them to improve their performance in various areas that benefit students.
