Madras Christian College has its origins in the General Assembly School founded by the Reverend. John Anderson, Church of Scotland missionary on April 3, 1837. Anderson was a pioneer in introducing English intermediate education to South India. He was ably assisted by the Reverend Johnston, by the Reverend. Braidwood and Margaret Locher Anderson. Tour. William Miller, who arrived in 1862, transformed the school into a college by adding FA and BA. course in 1865 and 1867.

Library
The College Library was founded in 1863, just a year after Miller arrived. This facility was transformed into a reference library in 1869, containing dictionaries, atlases, commentaries, and reference work in all branches of knowledge. This was open to students for one hour before college started and two hours after the college closed. In 1870, about 200 students had free access to the General Library and more than a thousand books were borrowed in a year. It was processed so efficiently that no missing volumes were found. In 1871, Mrs. Margaret Gunn of Latheron, Scotland endowed the Library with the sum of £1000 in memory of her husband Donald Gunn, who died in 1869. The interest on this sum was made available for the upkeep of the Library. The Hunter Commission on Education in 1882 praised the wealth of the library, as well as that of the Presidential College.
