The Garhbeta College started its journey from Banerjeedanga High School with only 50 students on 12th February 1950. The college was shifted to its campus constituted by the generous donation of 12.58 acres of land by the local fighter Late Basanta Kumar Sarkar and 9.56 acres of land by Midnapur Zamindar Company. The college is marching forward with a vision to achieve its mission of catering higher education to students of Paschim Medinipur and the adjoining districts of Bankura and Hooghly. In the 67 years of its long journey started just with a corrugated sheet shade in the jangal, the college has now reached a height and possesses long buildings, well-established laboratories with sophisticated instruments, and provided with other basic amenities that are essential for an institution of higher learning.

Since its inception, the College was affiliated with the University of Calcutta with Arts and Commerce stream in Intermediate standard at first. Affiliation up to B.A.(Pass) the standard was extended in 1957, followed by B.Sc (Pass) in 1960 and Mathematics (Hons) and History (Hons) in 1964. Subsequently, the University of Calcutta granted B.Com. (Pass) and Zoology (Pass) and Botany (Pass) in 1982 and 1983 respectively. In 1985, the education hunger people of undivided Midnapore received the long-waiting and most coveted gift from Vidyasagar University from UGC as well as Govt. of West Bengal, and Garhbeta College became affiliated with the University and the college steadily progressed in all its dimensions of the academic sphere. Now the college offers honors in thirteen subjects in arts, science, and commerce. Besides, there are three more general subjects, Two Year Teachers Training B.P.Ed. course, one major vocational course (O.M.S.P.). one professional BCA course.

Infrastructure and facilities:

Library:

Total Area of the Library: 3500 Sq.ft, Total seating capacity: 80 students and 20 teachers. Our library is on the ground floor. So, physically disabled students face no problem accessing the library as there is a ramp in front of the library corridor. The physically challenged students are helped by staff to provide them with books or study materials as required in the students’ reading room. The library has a suggestion/complaints Box. A good library with reading room facilities for students as well as for teachers is available. More than 33,000 books are available to students and staff of the college.

Hostel:

The college has its own provision to provide accommodation facilities for the students studying General degree courses as well as B.P.Ed. Course. The hostel encompasses an intake capacity of 70 students in the Boy’s Hostel and 100 students in the Girl’s Hostel. Students are asked to follow the rules and regulations framed by the college authority as a boarder in the hostel.

Woman Cell:

The Women Cell, ‘Saheli’ of Garhbeta College started its journey in the year of 2011. The College authority feels that there must be a platform for the women staff and girl students of the college to share their views, raise their voices against any undesirable incident concerning women on the college campus, and address social issues.

Eco Club: 

Garhbeta College has established the ECO Club to carry on friendship relations with the environment. Eco Club is very important as it established of focal point for all environmentally sustainable activities and programs.

Progress of the Place: 

Economically poor and academically backward Garbeta is changing remarkably, steadily progressing its mission of catering higher education to the students of Mindapore and Bankura.

Research and Publication: 

National and International level journals and articles are published. Research on various subjects takes place and the projects are approved by UGC.

Highly qualified and efficient faculty:- 

Qualified and experienced faculty are assigned to classrooms who can pay individual attention to the students. Classroom sessions are interactive and a high level of discipline is maintained in the classroom.

Mission

To provide qualitative education to the students coming from the poor and backward community of Bananchal based remote area of the district Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Purulia, and Hooghly of West Bengal. To inculcate discipline among the students in terms of sincerity, regularity, punctuality, and humanity and inspire them to develop themselves into socially responsible citizens of India by organizing NSS and NCC programs.
